Acqua di Gio Profumo took a fragrance everyone had smelled a thousand times and made it serious. The original is bright and blue and inoffensive. Profumo keeps the sea note and puts incense underneath it, and the result is the one aquatic that works after dark. Here is what is in it, what it costs, and our own version.
What Acqua di Gio Profumo smells like
Bergamot and a marine accord open it, cool and clean, recognisably the Acqua di Gio opening. Then geranium, rosemary and sage come through the middle and make it greener and sharper than you expect. The base is where it separates itself: incense and patchouli, smoky and dry, sitting underneath the sea air rather than replacing it. That contrast between something bright on top and something dark below is the whole idea, and it is executed unusually well.
Why people love it
Fresh fragrances tend to be safe and forgettable. This one is safe and memorable, which is rarer. It reads as clean in the way people want to smell at work, but the incense gives it enough weight for an evening. It is also one of the few aquatics that does not evaporate in Gulf heat, because the incense and patchouli hold on after the marine note lifts.
What it costs
A 75ml bottle of Acqua di Gio Profumo typically runs around AED 400 to 500 in the UAE. This is mainstream designer pricing, and for what it smells like it has always been fair value. Worth saying plainly: nobody is being overcharged here.
An honest alternative: Marine Incense
Marine Incense is our creation of Acqua di Gio Profumo. It runs the same idea: sea notes and bergamot at the top, rosemary, sage and geranium through the heart, incense and patchouli underneath. It is made in the UAE with French and Swiss oils at full eau de parfum strength, 25 to 30% concentration. A 100ml is AED 149, a 50ml is AED 99, and a 10ml oil roll-on is AED 59, all with free UAE delivery.
20.O2 is not affiliated with Giorgio Armani. Marine Incense is an original composition built around a profile people love, not a copy and not a counterfeit. We name Acqua di Gio Profumo only so you know the direction it takes.
Profumo or Marine Incense: how to choose
As with Dior Homme Intense, this is a closer call than most, because the original is reasonably priced. If Profumo is going to be your signature, buy Profumo. Marine Incense makes sense if you want this style alongside two or three others without spending AED 450 on each, or if you want a roll-on version for the gym bag. Both work well in this climate, which is more than can be said for most fresh fragrances here.
Try it before you commit
The Starter Kit is AED 59 for ten 2ml samples of your choice, redeemable against your first bottle. If fresh with some weight to it is your direction, the rest are in the men's collection. Free delivery across the UAE.
FAQs
What does Acqua di Gio Profumo smell like?
A cool marine and bergamot opening over green rosemary, sage and geranium, with smoky incense and patchouli underneath. Fresh at first and considerably darker as it settles.
How is Profumo different from the original Acqua di Gio?
The original is brighter, lighter and more straightforwardly aquatic. Profumo keeps the sea note but adds incense and patchouli underneath, which makes it deeper, longer lasting and much better suited to evenings.
Is Marine Incense the same as Profumo?
No. Marine Incense is an original 20.O2 composition built around the same marine and incense signature. It is not a copy, not a counterfeit, and not affiliated with Giorgio Armani.
Does it work in Dubai summer?
Yes, and better than most fresh fragrances. The marine top lifts quickly in heat, but the incense and patchouli base holds, so you are not left with nothing by mid-morning.
Is this a day or an evening fragrance?
Both, which is much of its appeal. Clean enough for the office in the morning, dark enough not to feel out of place at dinner. Marine Incense is built to behave the same way.
Where can I buy an Acqua di Gio Profumo alternative in the UAE?
Marine Incense is available directly from 20.O2, made in the UAE, at AED 99 for 50ml, AED 149 for 100ml, or AED 59 for a 10ml oil roll-on. Delivery is free across the UAE, and the AED 59 Starter Kit lets you try it first.
